Hang on... he wants to create a backup of his mails and settings in Outlook, and you're giving him instructions on how to remove it? When someone asks you for a bandage, do you stab them in the arm, too? Since I don't use Outlook myself, I'm afraid I can't help you. ---------------------------------------- ![]() Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today! |

Bah! I didn't quite know what he meant by "back up". Now, I do. And, as unfortunate as it is.... I can't help. ---------------------------------------- The "Official" Forum Family. Forum Family Sheriff: Koaru Cowboy: Abe Sinclair Howdypedia: B!H Wikipedia |

In the Outlook Express program itself, look in the help files for saving emails to another directory on your computer. I believe the only true way of backing anything up when you reinstall Windows is to burn everything to a CD or DVD. ----------------------------------------

Thank you all for your suggestions. I found some nice software such as PicoBackup Outlook Express Edition and Outlook Express Backup Genie which seem to do the job right. I will test a few more before deciding which one to buy. Thanks again! |

As a techie, I've had to re-install windows a few times. My first recommendation: Install a new installation of windows. Install windows off the CD. When you are asked if you want to format, say no. Select a new directory -- if you have one install in C:\Windows, the default second choice is C:\Winnt. Some (most?) programs will work just fine without having to re-install (you do not wipe \Program Files\ when you do this). Problems with a corrupted windows install will be fixed (rootkits!). Problems with corrupted programs will not. (Viruses). This is useful if you cannot reboot and back up your files. === Files/Profile: Your desktop, and "My Documents" are also subfolders of your profile. You find your profile in (by default) C:\Documents and Settings\<original, short account name>. If you upgraded from WinNT, it will be C:\Profiles\<original, short account name>. If the system has been re-installed, or names duplicated after renaming, there will be a suffix of .001, .002, etc. You can just save your entire profile. Delete your internet cache first (it is in there), and empty the folder in there named "Temp". Leave the folder itself. That takes care of most (not all) of the junk. *** Do Not Be Logged Into Your Account If You Backup/Restore Your Full Profile Directory. Your personal settings are stored in a database file in that directory that is locked, and unreadable while you are logged in. Yep, you cannot backup your own files while logged in on windows NT based systems. Go Figure. Outlook express: Microsoft defaults to storing your emails, etc, in a hidden subfolder of your profile. You can move these to another folder (strongly recommended). Go to (memory -- may be slightly off) (Menu) Tools -> Accounts (Tabs) Maintenance -> Store Folder. The default store folder will be some subdirectory of identities with an odd ("random") set of numbers/letters in there. Make it something useful, like "My Documents/Emails/Outlook Express". You also need to backup the address book/contact list. I remember that there was a menu command to export that, but I do not remember what it was. ** DRM licenses are stored somewhere in your profile. I do not know where. I do know that they can easily be lost if you don't know to back up your profile. Gee, I wonder why Microsoft hid them where you can't easily find them and back them up. ---------------------------------------- My sig? I like SIGKILL. |
